Many people have been led to believe that both facial and body acne only affect teenagers and younger adults.
However, this has been proven to be completely false. The negative effects and profound emotional and physical impact of acne directly impact a large segment of the adult population today.
While acne has been proven to not be a contagious skin disease it is a disorder that is the most widespread skin related problem found in the United States and the rest of the world today.
Acne has statistically been shown to directly effect upwards of 86% of the worlds teenagers regardless of race, culture or economic conditions.
Likewise between 12-15% of middle aged men and women suffer with one form of acne or another, which is an absolutely huge number of people not only across places like Canada and the United States but the world over.
In many cases there seems to be a direct relationship between acne in one’s teenage years and reappearing later in life without any definitive reason.
Often teenagers that have suffered with extreme cases of acne will be inflicted with the condition throughout their life, which without question can lead to extreme emotional and self-esteem issues not to mention very deep and powerful bouts of depression that have even been found to lead to suicide.
While scientists have yet been able to find the exact reason for adult onset acne there do seem to be some very powerful assumptions. Acne that without reason appears in both middle-aged men and women has been attributed to hormonal changes, which affect both sexes.
Testosterone in men and estrogen levels in women seem change as we age which in some seems to activate the acne switch in our bodies back to the on position.
Interestingly enough, day-to-day stress has been ruled out as a cause of middle aged acne, many researchers believe that while excessive levels of prolonged stress or severe nerve damage may lead to certain cases of adult acne it does not attribute to nearly 15% of the adult population the world over.
Other perhaps more simple thoughts on the matter are that middle-aged men and women are often less careful with their skin than teenagers.
Minor acne flare-ups tend to be inflamed by the daily shaving routine men endure. Alcohol based aftershaves can inflame the skin further making the redness appear even deeper and more intense.
Rubbing, scratching or poking acne lesions can introduce further infection and inflammation by introducing surface level bacteria from the skins surface which will lead to pitting and scaring, An entirely different nightmare to be forced to deal with.
In addition our skin and body heals itself at a much slower rate in our 30’s and 40’s than it did while we were teenagers. Often many of us have suffered decades of sun damage to our skins surface, which can lead to even more serious complications with adult onset acne.
Another interesting fact is middle-aged men and women that are inflicted with adult onset acne are often far less likely to visit their physician for professional help and treatment advice and options.
While some do try over the counter topical creams and medicine, it’s advised that you allow your doctor to check your condition and make a professional recommendation.
You may have nothing more than a case of overly sensitive skin which is reacting to something as simple a fragrance in a moisturizing cream or make-up, but it allows your doctor to also ensure you are not developing a far more serious condition like skin cancer.
Adult onset acne is a serious matter that can wreak havoc on your personal and professional life, while its not far you would possible be passed up for a promotion at work as a result of pimples it is a reality.
The world expects we put are best face forward, the question is are you ?
