The Psychological Impact of Acne and Self Esteem

Although important scientific research continues on in the hope of discovering an effective acne treatment and cure, the scientific community still has a very long way to go.

It can be nearly assured that most everyone has or will face some form of acne in their lives. While some will experience a non-existent to extremely mild degree of acne others will face life altering truly repulsive forms of acute acne so severe some will result to suicide in hopes of relieving themselves of their physical and emotion pain.

To date no scientific solution is available that will allow one to avoid acne, currently all that can be done minimizes the effects of existing acne to varying degrees with the aid of various acne treatments, acne antibiotics and topical creams.

Unfortunately, most acne lesions do appear on the face. Its this fact alone so many young men and women develop negative complexes or psychological associated problems that are connected to the acne problem at their root.

Acnes Social Impact

The theory that young women worry more about their appearance than men is an unfounded and disproven assumption that has caused serious harm to the psyche of young males the world over, especially here in the United States.

Young women and men are equally concerned about their physical image when it comes to acne and their appearance within their circle of peers and society at large.

While an extensive list of behavioral issues can be attributed to acne, below are some of the hallmark effects that are typically displayed by those so consumed with their acne condition it is detrimentally effecting their lives.

Common Acne Related Self Esteem Issues and Problems

  • No to very little self-confidence
  • Being preoccupied with their own appearance.
  • Overdressing or the complete opposite, not caring how they look whatsoever.
  • Pushing away friends or family and becoming resentful of others.
  • Isolation
  • Low self esteem
  • Suppressed anger issues
  • Having a negative self image, and a low opinion of his or her self, their skills and or intelligence
  • Depression.
  • In extreme cases suicide

All these psychological symptoms can be associated with acne. In severe cases of acne the psychological symptoms can be more severe and cause life long mental issues.

Surprising to some research has proven in may cases young men seem to develop negative psychological symptoms more so than young women. This is due to the fact, women will apply make up to cover acne lesions an option most normal men would never consider.

While in severe cases cover up and make up will not completely restore a pre-acne appearance women still tend to fair better than men.

Acne is not just a temporary skin condition; in many instances when acne causes scarring the psychological problems increase drastically. Some people argue that those with acne or severe cases of acne and the lesions or scarring they encounter; are being over dramatic, the suicide rate in relation to acne seems to prove otherwise.

Acne is a skin disease that for some will cause very serious psychological problems that can last ones entire life.

Acne and Mental Health

Acne and its profound effect on mental health should be taken seriously, and the impact it has on young men and women.

Telling a young man or woman with acne not to be concerned, or any one with a severe case of acne, is actually offensive, insensitive and dangerous to many.

Unfortunately, some acne cases can cause serious deep facial scarring and even nerve damage.

Therefore, these men and women who are suffering form acne already look down upon themselves and feel less than others that have not been inflicted with the same degree of acne trauma in there lives.
